After reading this article, we\u2019re certain you\u2019ll want to because this communication tool can be useful to improve engagement and retention. We\u2019ve highlighted a few tricks to guide you in the preparation of your surveys.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is it important to survey?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To discover who your donors\/volunteers\/employees are, as well as the reasons for their engagement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To further develop relationships with them and acknowledge their support;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To obtain their feedback about different aspects of the organization;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For more effective communications and to create messages that are adapted and relevant for them. 53% of donors don\u2019t return the following year due to a lack of communication (<a href=\"https:\/\/bloomerang.co\/\"><strong>Bloomerang<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To develop new solicitation strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In short, surveys allow us to do much more than collect information about our supporters. They also provide the opportunity to get feedback on your events or your fundraising campaigns, to engage your donors\/volunteers\/employees, to better understand their motivations for getting involved with your cause and to better meet their needs and expectations.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Considerations<\/h3>\n\n<p>Four important questions to ask when planning to send a survey :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What\u2019s the objective of sending your survey?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do you want to learn?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who will receive the survey?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will you use the information collected?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Send<\/h3>\n\n<p>It depends on your organization\u2019s activities. However, here are a few suggestions of when it may be helpful:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>After receiving a donation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>This will allow you to learn more about your donor and his or her motivations and preferences which can guide you for your next solicitation.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>After an event<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>To obtain feedback from participants\/volunteers to improve future editions.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Year end<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>To obtain interesting data that will allow you to plan strategically for the following year.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>In a newsletter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>To survey subscribers on topics they\u2019d like to see covered in the newsletter.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Build a Survey<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use a maximum of 5 questions. A small number of questions will increase your participant response rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be as precise as possible with your questions and don\u2019t leave room for interpretation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t ask a question within a question.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use different types of questions: multiple choice, scales, open-ended, comments, etc. But don\u2019t ask too many open-ended questions because they require more effort from respondents, which can discourage them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personalize and let your donors\/volunteers\/employees know that the survey is a useful tool to improve their experience with the organization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let them know how much time the survey will take and how many questions it contains to encourage participants to click on the link.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inform them that the survey is anonymous, if applicable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give a deadline for completion of the survey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test the questionnaire before sending it out by asking a colleague or family member to complete it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow-up with a reminder to increase your response rate.
